Exercise and your dog

We all know about the benefits of exercise for ourselves but exercise is equally as important for your dog’s health and well being. Well exercised dogs are happier, more alert, sleep better, live longer and have fewer health and behavioral problems.

A brisk 30 minute walk once or twice a day will be sufficient for the majority of dogs. For very active breeds twice this  amount may be necessary to burn off all that extra energy. If your dog is a lot more active then you, you may like to have him fetch a ball or flying disk. Many dog behaviorists suggested that exercise is the key factor in containing dog from being too active, being too bored and could solve several behavior problems.

So try to establish a daily routine. Dogs love a routine and will quickly learn to look forward to exercise time. There is a website that lists most of the dog friendly park areas in your neighborhood

Obedience training is a very good idea. It helps establish a good relationship between a dog and their owner and gives you a lot more control over your dog.

Start off slowly. Increase the duration and intensity of the exercise a bit at a time until your dog’s and your own stamina improves. Start off walking or running on soft ground until your dog’s paws toughen up. If your dog has a medical problem such as arthritis or a heart condition it is best that you have them checked by a vet before starting an exercise regime. These dogs will still benefit from regular exercise but you may need to tailor your program to suit your dog’s condition.

Avoid exercising your dog immediately before and after he has eaten. Exercising on a full stomach can lead to serious gastro-intestinal problems such as bloat and gastric torsion.

Unless there is absolutely no danger of a traffic accident or a fight with other dogs it is best to keep your dog on a lead.

Take care when exercising on very hot or humid days as dogs can suffer from heat exhaustion. Dogs regulate their body temperature by panting and prolonged exposure to very hot weather may overcome this ability to regulate body temperature. Many dogs are extremely loyal and will try to keep up with their owners which can lead to them overexerting themselves.

When you are out remember that it is a common courtesy to pick up after your dog poops. It is easy to carry a plastic bag with you, pick up the droppings and dispose of them responsibly in the trash can.

Happy Summer, Pet Lovers.
